Talking points when you call:

    {source: Robert Reich}

    Reports from Congress’s own number-crunchers show the tax plan hurts the poor and middle class and benefits the rich, even more than thought before.

  • According to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO),  by 2019, Americans earning less than $30,000 a year would be worse off; by 2021, Americans earning $40,000 or less would be net losers; by 2027, most people earning less than $75,000 a year would be worse off. The big winners would be people earning over $500,000.
  • The main reason the poor get hit so hard is they'd receive less government aid for health care. The Senate Republican bill eliminates the requirement that almost all Americans purchase health insurance or pay a penalty, which will cause health insurance premiums to rise –thereby causing 4 million Americans to lose coverage by 2019 and 13 million by 2027. Medicare and Medicaid would also be cut.
  • The Joint Committee on Taxation reports that even apart from the loss of health benefits, by 2027 people earning less than $75,000 would end up paying more. That's because individual tax cuts expire in 2026 while corporate tax cuts are permanent.
  • And don’t forget: America's rich have never been as rich, and America’s poor and most of the middle class have been on a downward escalator for years, adjusted for inflation. In the 1970s, the top 1 percent took home about 10 percent of the nation's total income. Today, they take home 20 percent.
  • Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security and the Children's Health Insurance Program will be targeted to pay for this program.
